Vacuum sealing jars

I know many of us store bulk tobacco in Mason jars.
Do you vacuum seal the jars similar to how one would doo when using the Mason jars for canning?
I have read where some will have a near boiling container of water present, push the jar containing the tobacco down into the hot water for a few minutes then apply the lid to the jar. The theory is that the hot water heats up the tobacco and air in the jar and then once you put the top on and let it cool down, it creates a vacuum seal.
Have you tried this?
I know regularly that once I let the jars sit without doing this they do seem to create a vacuum seal, and I could see this helping.
